Dark oak trees do not drop enough saplings

Dark Oak trees take 4 saplings to grow, but only have enough leaves to give 3-5 based on how lucky you are. This makes them unsustainable for farming or even spreading for decoration. Every other tree gives many more saplings than it takes to grow, but with dark oak they will go extinct if you try to farm them as is.

Actually the same has always happened with jungle trees (and now perhaps the tall spruce?)

2x2 jungle trees have many layers of leaves, and the 2x2 spruce has a variation with leaves all the way down so neither of them are as bad. They also have a single sapling version that helps, but the dark oak only has 2x2.

Not seeing the issue. I got exatly enough to make 2 trees from one tree (see screen shots)

The drop chance of saplings is the same for all leaf blocks, or not? There shouldn't be a difference with dark oak tree leaves.

There isn't a differnce.. the only one that has a difference in formula is with oak leaves, they have a second chance of dropping apples... which I think the dark oak leaves have the same chance as well

Seems to be fixed in 1.7.2, just got 11 saplings from one dark oak. Either I was incredibly unlucky before or they fixed it now 🙂

I don't think it's fixed unless you get really lucky. I just grew 5 dark oak trees and I'm down 2 saplings from where I started.

I am also unable to reproduce.

I have been experiencing this issue for a while, and still am, in Minecraft 1.12. I am trying to farm dark oak, collecting every sapling possible and making sure leaves don't grow together, at a loss. I run out of saplings. Each tree only seems to be dropping two or three.

Since it was mentioned earlier that there isn't a difference in the drop rate of saplings, I do see a difference in the number of leaves on the tree. Looking at them, it does seem that dark oak trees have fewer leaves than other trees that grow with four saplings.

This issue should be reopened, because I am still experiencing it which means it is still an issue that exists in the game.

I have seen this issue as well...

You often don't get the amount of saplings you need to grow another tree. You are required to obtain at least four just for one tree, and there are so few leaves that this is often incredibly difficult without a hoe with fortune or something. Every other tree either:

  • Requires only 1 sapling to grow

  • Has other easy ways to obtain their saplings, like from moss blocks or using bone meal on their leaves

  • Has many more leaves so you can easily obtain many

  • Can be grown in a 2 by 2, but can be grown as a single sapling if you don't have many

This could be pretty easily fixed by just increasing the rate of dropped saplings from leaves.

It's also annoying when you buy it from a wandering trader, but MUST buy 4 in order to get a single tree.
