unexplored areas...of maps...are transparent...in item frames.
i expected to see the background layer as i do when holding the map in hand, but once placed in an item frame, the frame extends and explored areas of the map seem to float while the frame is still visible in areas that were not explored.

i'm aware of the purpose of this site, hence i'm reporting a bug. the only suggestion i'm making is that the bug be fixed.
prior versions of the game show the map as it is in hand. in 1.7.2, however, it does not appear as it probably should. how else would you like me to word this so as to make you believe it's a game bug?
The report you have submitted is working as intended, mechanics of the game may change between updates. Things such as biomes, redstone, villagers and animals, may not work the same in current versions.
We strongly recommend that you don’t run 1.7.x on an existing world if you don’t want to run into chunk border issues.
World structures such as Nether Fortresses do not transition to 1.7 from 1.6, but loading these areas (and standing in them) in the new pre-release 1.6.4 and then going to 1.7.x should fix this.

Maps in item frames now cover the whole block so that connected maps join together smoothly. The item frame can only be seen when viewed from the side.
Maps now display on a full block basis and no longer display player markers
Just because you have not revealed the entire map does not mean it's a bug.
ah ha, but clearly it is not working as intended, or otherwise the explanation for how it is meant to work was misquoted. i know that the item frame covers the whole block. that is not the issue here. the issue is that the item frame is not ONLY visible when viewed from the side, which is what should be expected. if it were true that it could "only be seen when viewed from the side," i would not be able to see it when viewed from any other angle, whether or not i've explored the map.
so what you're telling me is, if i fully explore a map and can't see the item frame behind it, then that's the real bug?
i'm not an english major, but i know that the word "only" is exclusive, so that regardless of whether or not the item frame is its normal size or its "full block scale," it should not be visible when looking at it head on. seeing as it IS visible when looking at it head on (due to the fact that unexplored areas are simply rendered invisible when placed on the item frame), that doesn't sound intentional in the least. unless Jeb says it's intended, going by what was said regarding maps in frames (as so generously provided here by Talven), the only intention is that frames are visible from the side ONLY.
