I downloaded the new 1.7.2 update and the blocks went black

I downloaded the new 1.7.2 update and started playing, everything was alright and then I put the torch in my quick bar and placed it down and the biome went black, some of the items in my inventory turned into just black blocks. I can see mobs fine and the sky but I can't tell where I am going.
I 'fixed' it by changing my resource pack but as soon as I grabbed the torch it did something different and I could see through the whole map but nothing was black and I'd have to change the resource pack again...
the torch was the only item giving me problems, and I didn't play for very long after this happened the first time.
