This is confirmed not to be a universal issue with Windows 8.
Which edition of Windows 8? I have Windows 8 Pro and all of my servers work normally.
Are you running:
Windows 8 Pro
Windows 8
Windows RT
You should not be able to run Minecraft on Windows RT as only apps form the Windows Store are certified to run on RT.
yes i use windows 8 pro so what could it be

I have the exact same problem. There's a more detailed description here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1620081-failed-to-verify-username/#entry19950084

If your running on kaspersky 2013 see the below link for a solution.
This could be caused by many things. Through what medium are you connecting to this server? (is is local or over the internet...) Do you have any mods installed on either the server or the client? Is anyone else connected to the server? Does the server have offline-mode set to true? Try to provide as many details as possible.
