If you click outside of the crafting sub-window (on the greyed out background) while you have items 'on the table' (in the 9 item grid), they are destroyed. When you click outside the sub-window it closes the crafting mode like you might expect, but the items left on the table are not dropped like they are when properly exiting, they are destroyed instead.

Attached requested crash report.
With a little more research and talking to another player:
his version (same server, same minecraft version) does nothing when you click outside the sub-window, the crafting sub-window stays up
in my version, you can also click out of chests in a similar way (click outside the sub-window), and the chest block looks like it stays 'open' but the window goes away just like the crafting window goes away (for me).
Your Java version is out of date! Please update your Java to the latest version (1.7.0_45): http://www.java.com/en/download/.
When using a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit operating system the automatic version detection will only show the 32-bit version of Java, the 64-bit version needs to be downloaded manually: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.
Please report if the issue persists with the latest Java version.
Same issue having forced it to run in Java 1.7.0_45 (took me a while to figure out how to do that, what with apple not supporting/pushing java updates anymore.
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 1.7.4 / Launcher version 1.3.8 or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
