[MC-42373] Redstone causes area specific FPS drop

Confirmed:
This issue has been identified as being caused by redstone clocks usually within the 12x12 chunk area, causing a 1 chunk wide FPS drop area between the always-loaded and sometimes-loaded chunks. This behavior has also been described outside the always-loaded chunks.

Not all clocks will cause this issue, and it is currently unknown why some clocks are affected and others are not.

Unconfirmed:
This may be caused by additional redstone devices, and may not be restricted to redstone clocks. Additional reports have been submitted describing the same behavior related to item frames now that they are redstone-enabled, and have been related to this ticket.

Temporary Resolution:
Disabling certain redstone clocks within the 12x12 always-loaded chunk will remove the lag. Note that not all redstone clocks will cause this issue, you must find the specific clock causing the problem and disable it.

Server Recommendation:
Do not build redstone clocks within this area until the issue is resolved. If clocks are required, after activating, verify that this issue does not appear. If it should appear try moving your clock.

When playing on a sever hosted by a friend's computer AND single player (loading the world in both forms) areas of the map become "dead zones" by which I mean you cannot access them without your FPS dropping to 0. If you "escape" this areas your FPS boosts right back up to 60-70 (for me). Chunk loading drops to 0 also.

These areas appear randomly and spontaneously around the 12 x 12 spawn area I suspect. They were not there upon world creation. When other people load the world up, they too find these areas and they can pinpoint the same areas like myself.

Furthermore, I have used McEdit to try and delete all entities and check for chunk areas and I could not find a solution/resolve it. In summary this "Bug" seems to be unrelated to computer performance and is an actual ingame issue: It has a huge impact on a players area/creation as the FPS drop to 0 makes the area inaccessible. Logging in/out initially gives your FPS a boost to normal then within 3-5 seconds it drops again.

This is not a global FPS performance issue but a very specific area issue.

Can you add the version 1.7.4 as well? Because it happens there too.

Can confirm, same issue happening within our loaded spawn chunks. Areas affected seem to possibly be affected when /setworldspawn is moved.

Here is mine as well, I have taken my world file off of my server, and have entered it in single player for testing. Was in game moving around freely for about 10 minutes before it started locking up. I was in the dead zones just fine for those first 10 minutes, then then it started freezing.

Hopper timers in your 12x12 spawn chunk? You probably have a redstone device inside making it glitch out, I have run into this on my server as well. The 0fps (12FPSish on high end gaming machines) should happen right at the always-loaded border. Look for redstone devices you can turn off and see if the issue continues. You may need to restart the server to obtain full FPS.

Yup similar to my setup, disable the lighthouse and see if your issue goes away. I've been trying to figure out the cause of this for a while, I created an almost identical issue in the 1.7 snapshots but was unable to determine the exact cause. I was hoping someone else would report this, was starting to think it was an issue with my server since nobody else mentioned it.

Remember, your server might require a restart before the lag goes away completely, after disabling redstone devices.

Edit: OK I shut off the lighthouse (Redstone circuitry), restarted the server, joined, and I don't believe it. I am running around in the dead zone without any FPS drop. It worked, even though the lighthouse is quite a couple chunks away from it. I don't know how they relate, but they seem they really do.

OK I am marking this as "community consensus" confirmation as we have not yet identified the exact reason.

What does your lighthouse contain? You said you used a repeater-timer? Also inverters and redstone lamps?

The strange thing about this is I have a nearly identical setup on my map next to the one that makes the lag, no difference should be noticeable. (2 thrusters on a ship, only one causes the lag)

The only thing we use in the lighthouse are Redstone, Repeaters, Redstone Torches and Glowstone attached to Sticky Pistons. Timed so that it makes the Glowstones "rotate".

Also: My server runs on version 1.7.4, no mods/TPs server side used. Might add this to "Affected Versions" if that's possible.

That's similar to what I was trying except with redstone lamps and blinking instead of rotating. Due to past testing I'm starting to think it's something with powering the lamps, so in the light source or the torch powering it. I will try some additional testing now that I know I'm not going crazy. 🙂

(By the way going to assume you are using inverters based upon your description... redstone torches turned off by an input signal.)

Any clue why a totally unrelated chunk/several chunks could lag because of this? The "dead zone" is, I'd say, minimum 15 chunks away from the lighthouse.

Although that may have fixed your particular instance, I don't think it counts as any sort of resolution on this issue as a whole. A simple case of redstone inversion (which has been around for quite a while) should not drop FPS to such an extreme.

Correct the lag appears at the 12 chunk always-loaded line surrounding the spawnpoint, possibly due to a corrupt or having multiple redstone timers active within this area. Removing one or more timers corrects the issue.

The lag becomes more serious the closer you are to the always-loaded/sometimes-loaded chunk line and covers 16 blocks (1 chunk).

I'm not sure how you are relating this, to anything to do with lighting.

You can fix it temporarily, see above.

It's not random, see redstone timers mentioned above.

If it's not because of a redstone clock, then you are on the wrong bug, and have not provided any reason it's not a redstone clock. The redstone clock issue has been verified by multiple users through comparator and hopper clocks with minimal additional redstone connected (no light sources).

I was able to fix it by teleporting very close to my redstone powered lighthouse and stop it working. Interestingly, when I appeared there the game became responsive again so I was able move. Now it's fine again. The world is saved!

I have also noticed this bug outside of the spawn chunks. In my base (8000) blocks from spawn I have been building farms. Most recently I constructed a mob farm that uses water to flush mobs. As soon as I activated the hopper timer in this area there is an issue for anyone entering the base via the nether portal, or even coming in from the surrounding chunks. The issue occurs on the boundaries of my base, if you come out of the nether, as soon as you load you have 0 FPS and are unable to move until you log out and back in.

After reading this ticket, I disabled the hopper timer for the water flush and the issue has completely gone away.

Is it possible that the hopper time has been keeping chunks loaded at my base?

Having the same issue on my newly reset server. Built a water flush mob trap using one of Ethos' hopper timers, and this issue appeared in 1 chunk right in the center of my spawn chunks. I have not used the /setworldspawn command.

However, the mob trap is well outside of the 12x12 chunk area and is the only structure that contains a redstone clock; there is quite literally zero redstone within the 12x12 area.

Like everyone else has said, disabling the clock fixed the issue immediately.

Same here, my redstone clock (hoppers) is within a single chunck. But I have redstone connected to it leading outside the chunck (on two other chuncks to be precise).

My redstone system as it is causes fps drops on some chuncks
If I have my clock active and cut the redstone going out of the chunck, I don't get any fps drop (I have droppers connected to this system inside and outside the chunck, so droppers inside the chunck are still working properly)
If i let redstone connected to my clock into another chunck, fps drops are back

To me it seems like it could be related to some update it causes in another chunck.

Also the memory Minecraft uses isn't affected. And when those drop occurs, my processor usage is lower.

Just experimented around with this bug because I have been having this problem on my world. I was skeptical at first but by punching out one redstone torch the problem areas vanished! Well, I did some tests on my world and the problem is coming from water flowing into another chunk (I am not saying for everyone). Also, just water doesn't cause fps drops, it has to be activated/deactivated by a dropper and it depents on how many water you have (I was able to get some short fps drops by gradually improve the surface of the plateform).
By the way, my clock is used to activate water flushing mobs (for a mob grinder).
I can share my tests here if needed.

Also I tried with just a pulsar (I think it's the name for the one I used), so without hopper and comparator, and I still get fps drops.

For me, it has nothing to do with clocks. Still, disabling them disable power in the circuit so it helps to temporarily fix the problem.
I will try with other stuff when I have time (Redstone lamp, Minecart, ...).

What I was saying was that clocks are not the problem here, they just give the power (pulsar, hopper-clock, ...) to whatever is making fps drops (dispenser and other stuff). It sure is about the toggling on/off of the redstone dust, but it is not about the clock itself (as the clock alone don't make fps drops).

At least this is what I think according to my tests.

You are right though, I made a mistake: I am not using droppers but dispensers.

I have in the past (beta 1.7) seen this problem or something very similar to it with just some redstone wire and torches hooked up to pistons. No clocks, it was just all wired to a lever to open/close doors to let combatants out of their rooms. Breaking a random piece of redstone or torch would solve the problem even if you put it back right away. It was a different piece each time though so you'd end up tearing the machine apart each time.

In this case the server kept working just fine, no extra CPU usage or anything. The clients in the area though had low FPS and would end up "falling behind" in chat and such.

On my server, with the same water pushing mob trap it is NOT caused by the redstone. If I remove the water buckets from the dispensers but leave the redstone connected and functioning I don't get the lag.

edit: I tried replacing the water buckets with arrows. No lag. I tried with lava. No lag (mind you, lava doesn't spread as far as water).

I tried changing the packed ice platforms for iron blocks (with water dispensed). Still lag.

So yes, it has something to with the water, not the redstone clocks.

It's worth noting that all my redstone circuits that involve other dispensers are still working just fine. Re-enabling the mob farm's clock to dispenser connection causes the dead zones to reappear. It's also worth noting that it didn't matter what piece of the clock-to-dispenser pathway I removed to disable the clock triggering the water dispensers.

I am personally convinced this has something to do with dispensers being used to place and pickup water source blocks. Can anyone else who has reported this problem test to verify this? ie: re-enable all circuitry except that which uses water dispensers, see if the dead zones remain gone, then re-enable the water dispensers and see if they return?

Yes once again John... this ticket was originally opened due to hopper-clocks and repeater-clocks causing the issue, with no water, no dispensers. There may be other causes from other types of redstone devices but dispensers with water is not the root cause.

Perhaps it's something to do with repeated block or lighting updates triggered at certain locations? That might explain why the problem is caused by redstone or water. If you experience this with dispensers and water, try instead putting a clock circuit where the water would pour out, and see if it causes the same issue. Equally, it's possible that dispensing water at the locations where people are having problems with clock circuits would also cause the same issue. Given how location-specific the issue is, it's likely a result of some formula breaking on certain coordinates.

@@unknown: Honestly can't say, as I was able to reproduce it with two hoppers, a comparator and a couple pieces of redstone to complete the clock circuit, with nothing else attached, however attaching more did seem to make it slightly worse but nothing I can confirm. The lighting update I doubt because there is no light output from my setup, but you could be correct on the formula issue, just haven't found anything to pinpoint and confirm.

I can confirm this bug in 1.7.5. A hopper clock (inside spawn chunks) in my SSP world causes 0FPS in a small area about 100 blocks away. As soon as I disable the clock I have no problems with FPS drops. I also have 2 other clocks in my spawnchunks which cause no problems.

I am having this issue. After a lot of testing with a friend, we have found if he stands 10 chunks from my location and I enable a redstone circuit driving a water dispenser he gets bad FPS drop.

We then disabled the redstone and the FPS returned to normal levels.

Interestingly this could be duplicated using just a bucket with water and no redstone. If he was 10 chunks away and lag free, all I had to do was create a water source with a bucket (no dispenser or anything) and he got bad FPS drop while the water spread. No need for a redstone circuit. This happens anytime he is exactly 10 chunks away regardless of my location (tested as far as x:~2000 z:~2000). At distances less than or further than 10 chunks he got no FPS drop.

The red represents the area where both redstone and entities are loaded, being 13x13. The blue represents where redstone is loaded, but not entities, being 17x17. The green represents chunks that are still forced (personally I don't know the usage), maxing the spawn chunks to 25x25.
