I tried to setblock x: y: z: for a comparator and it said "no such item ID minecraft:comparator

Incorrect command.

/setblock ~ ~1 ~ unpowered_comparator 4

The subtraction mode is determined by the damage/data value. From numbers 4-7 is the subtraction mode, each one has a different facing direction. 0-3 is the facing while not in subtraction mode. 8-11 is for a powered comparator. 12-15 is for a powered comparator in subtraction mode.
