I pulled out an iron sword and found that I was able to break blocks in creative mode with an iron sword. I tested all other swords and could not break any blocks with them. Only applies to the iron sword.

I'm not sure what happened, but immediately after this post I attempted to replicate it again and it didn't work. I dont know how that is possible, but I believe it is worth a look into.
