Fireball and SmallFireball entities crash the game when created with the /summon command. Sometimes the game simply freezes, sometimes it instantly closes itself and returns to the launcher. It happens in the tick right after hitting enter or triggering the redstone circuit with command block.
Fireballs created by Ghasts, Blazes and Dispensers do not create any issues, though.
Other entities, even other projectiles such as arrows and thrown potions can be summoned without problems.
It might be related to the Linux implementation of Java, since the issue never occured on Windows systems.
The selected Minecraft version is a potentially unstable snapshot, but I experienced the problem in past full releases as well.
To reproduce:
1. Install Minecraft on a Linux system (perhaps 64 bit only, had no chance to test on 32 bit)
2. Create a world with cheats enabled
3. /summon Fireball ~ ~ ~
4. Crash

Attached the logs. Names are pretty much self-explanatory. forced is the one caused by F3 and C, fireball is the one caused by the summon.
Your Java version is out of date! Please update your Java to the latest version (1.7.0_51): http://www.java.com/en/download/.
When using a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit operating system the automatic version detection will only show the 32-bit version of Java, the 64-bit version needs to be downloaded manually: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.
Please report if the issue persists with the latest Java version.
Seems like that was the problem. Upgraded from Java 6 to Java 7, now it works fine.
Hooked a command block with /summon Fireball to a rapid firing clock and nothing happened so far.
Well, for me the problem was an outdated Java version. Perhaps that also applies to you too?
Also, when I said "the issue never occured on Windows systems", I meant windows systems I played at, not that it never ever happened in history.
Cannot confirm with Windows 7-64
Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while in-game and attach the crash report (
[minecraft/crash-reports/crash-<DATE>-client.txt|http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder]
) here. After summoning fireballs: Please attach the complete output of the "Development console" which can be found on the second tab of the launcher.
