As of 1.7.4 (though I could be mistaken), active hoppers cause extreme lag (essentially freezing the game) when traveling a certain distance away. I believe this occurs when their chunks are unloaded.
I use hopper clocks in many of my worlds (see screenshot). All of these worlds became extremely laggy. The lag occurred only when I was a certain distance from the hoppers--about the right range to unload them. I destroyed one such clock, and the lag disappeared. I then rebuilt it: lag returned. I then turned the hoppers off with redstone, and the lag disappeared. I turned it back on, and the lag returned.
Based on these observations, I think that when an active hopper (ie, one passing or receiving inventory and not turned off with redstone current) becomes unloaded, it lags the game to the point of freezing. I don't know if it matters, but in all cases the hoppers were above 128 Y.

It looks as if all my hoppers are in the same chunk in two worlds where i have had this problem (didn't check the third). However, it's fair to point out that they are connected to a lot of redstone and water controlling pistons, not all of which is in the same chunk as them.
I have since tried recreating the bug in creative, but it didn't bug out. I started a new creative world and copy-pasted the whole mob grinder into it at the same Y as the other worlds, and moved away, but only got a minor little lag spike on leaving the area, as opposed to the game-breaking freeze.
However, the 'turn off the clock' fix has worked both the worlds that I tested it on.

it could also be because its a mob grinder and a lot of mobs get spawned when the spawning range hits the grinder.
and i actually meant, look for hoppers right at chunk borders facing the chunk next to that border.

When using a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit operating system the automatic version detection will only show the 32-bit version of Java, the 64-bit version needs to be downloaded manually: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.
Updated Java, problem persisted.
However, I did some more testing on it, and the problem isn't the hoppers themselves but the other stuff that's hooked up to them. Ie, I left the hoppers churning but disconnected them from the other redstone around them, and that fixed things. So maybe the problem is large-ish (few hundred) block updates right on the edge of loaded/unloaded.
Could you look whether the hoppers are directly pointed at another chunk, this could cause the hoppers to load ( or prevent ) the neighbouring chunk they are facing to ( from unloading ).
