Item and XP drops are sucked towards the player's feet instead of their chest/torso

Possibly due to Grum's noted 14w06a change: Grum's techy notes on Twitter.
Fixed server referencing Entities by origin, client referencing by eyes (!!)

In first person mode, items and XP orbs no longer fly towards the player's hand (eyes, really) upon pickup, instead flying and being absorbed into the player's feet, where the origin of the entity supposedly is.
This is an awkward aesthetic bug which can be troublesome; sometimes you cannot see whether you've picked an item up because it's flown into your feet, not your chest where you can see it every time.

Compare with versions before 14w06a/1.8 to see the difference.

Still in 14w11b

I thought I saw this in the update log from one of the 1.8 snapshots

williewillus

This is not WIA.
Grum's technical notes say that client now references by origin of entity now as of 14w06a.
https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/blocknotes.txt
This is used to play the animation effect (entity is rendered flying from the ground to the entity picking it up's position). Position on the client used to be the eye level, but it was refactored in 14w06, so this animation now flies to a point much lower.

Looking at Mojang's post for 14w06a: https://mojang.com/2014/02/minecraft-snapshot-14w06a/
No mention whatsoever of this "intended change".
Besides it makes no aesthetic sense nor does it satisfy any need for change. Many times you can no longer tell what or if an item has been picked up because it goes under you, not into your chest.
Please reopen.

Tokes

I don't know who marked this as affecting 14w18a. In that snapshot there is no pickup animation at all.

williewillus

It's still there but plays super fast, so it's almost like there wasn't one at all.
The effects of this bug still apply too, further reducing awareness of whether an item was picked up or not.
This is one of the most core animations mc has had, hope Mojang doesn't botch this up too o.o

wobst.michael

Still in 14w27b. In 1.7.10 it works as expected.

Sle5_Kull

This mistake spoils all gameplay because all players got used that XP and blocks, subjects and all the rest in Minecraft that it is possible to hold in hand don't fly to the player as earlier (

Joshua Jones

An annoying bug when picking up items coloured similarly to surrounding blocks (common!). It is especially irritating in dark conditions such as collecting clay underwater, as it makes it hard to tell straight away whether an item has been picked up.

wobst.michael

Still an issue in 14w32a. Info for the Mojang devs: in 1.7.10 it works as expected.

Torabi

Well, this probably fixes MC-11519, though @unknown's notes suggests the change wasn't made specifically for that reason. I'm a little surprised it doesn't appear to have fixed MC-460, since that is reportedly caused by a client-server position mismatch.

AJ Ruckman

Big bug. I really wish mojang would fix this, this seems like the kindof bug they miss in the snapshot and never fix.

Mustek

A visual annoyance is barely a big bug. There's plenty of bigger fish to fry.

AJ Ruckman

"barely a big bug" is still a bug.

Torabi

Yes, and so are most of the other ~2900 open issues. Are you saying this one is more important than all of those?

AJ Ruckman

I never said anything about this one being more important than the others, but as this issue has been open for 6 months and still isn't fixed, perhaps it is time for further action (such as a repost.) No need to be rude.

Torabi

In case there's any doubt, it's never time for a repost. That just clutters up the bug tracker and causes more work for the moderation team. This ticket is still open, and not even close to being the oldest one. I cannot see how either @unknown or my comments qualify as "rude". Everyone considers different bugs to be more or less important, which is why the tracker has a voting system to allow Mojang to get a feel for popular opinion on the matter. Comments that do not include any new information about a bug aren't going to help it get fixed any faster, and instead only annoy anyone watching the issue.

14w34c: Items and XP still fly towards my feet.

williewillus

^ yes. In third person mode they fly to the eyes, but in first person they fly somewhere in between the feet and eyes. It's not as bad as it was before but still looks like we're absorbing blocks into our crotches or something, haha.

Torabi

Your hands are somewhere between your feet and your eyes, so that sounds like an improvement over either of the previous behaviors. But yes, it does still seem a bit low when trying it out.

Still an issue in 1.8-pre2.

Still an issue in 1.8.

Still an issue in Minecraft 1.8.1

Dlawso the Really Lucky Rabbit

After testing, I can confirm this issue is fixed in 1.8.2-pre6, possibly earlier.

wobst.michael

No, cannot confirm it's fixed in 1.8.2-pre6. Also please note that this issues mostly applies to first person view.

williewillus

This is only partially fixed in 14w34c+. It looks completely fine in third person view (items fly towards the player's hands / head area). In first person mode, however, the items still fly a little lower than they used to, now flying somewhere towards the waist/crotch area. Compare with 1.7.10 for proper behavior.

wobst.michael

Still an issue in 1.8.8 and all 1.9 snapshots.

Caused by the fix of MC-11519

AJ Ruckman

XP is fixed in 15w51b, didn't test items.

Elemend

I tried to recreate, but the Movement of Items and XP Orbs are directed towards the players hip/torso. This Issue is fixed in 1.13.1-pre1.

kumasasa

... or fixed in 1.13 ?

Elemend

Yes actually! In 1.13 it's the same behaviour. Fixed.👍

wobst.michael

No, this is still not fixed. Nothing has changed here. Also don't get mislead by the attached screenshots. It's about first person mode.

Kraif

Confirmed for 1.13.1.

Swekob

The items are not necessarily moving towards the feet, as some already stated. They move towards the knees/torso it looks like from first person.

If that is the bug, then it's affecting 1.14.4 and 1.15-pre1.

NeunEinser

I can't reproduce this in 20w07a, xp gets sucked to my torso:

This is the intended height as evident by @unknown's comment in MC-11519
