Fill replace still gives comparator output when the command 'fails'

If you're using the fill command to replace certain blocks, for example:

/fill 0 0 0 10 10 10 dirt 0 replace stone

the command (if put in a commandblock) will give a comparator output no matter what. Even if there aren't any blocks to replace.
