This seems to happen at random, and in older versions could be fixed by exiting the game and reentering, but ever since I started playing Minecraft I've found that often times the maps "break" and player markers simply stop showing up. This makes the map completely useless and leaves the player attempting to use it lost with no way home other than the /kill command.
