The bug
The 14w04a changelog says, the update would block x-ray textures:
Rendering
Only transparent blocks will now render as transparent (eliminates the use of x-ray texture packs)
Most blocks are solid but they render as transparent blocks with a X-Ray resource pack enabled.

No, really I mean xray is still working after 14w04a, because the solid blocks are transparent in the inventory and they are transparent in-game when I get away from them.
And grass is a solid block that is transparent always with the resoruce pack (far and near).
On 14w34d grass block is still rendered as a transparent block. That makes x-ray completely functional.
I do not believe that the block is being rendered as transparent, they most likely did fix this as it works fine with other blocks. Because you can still see through them though, it is most likely due to the added layer grass gets for color in biomes. That is probably "transparent" so that it only applies the color change. My hypothesis would mean that the issue lies outside the normal area that one would expect to look in code to fix such an issue.
Is this still an issue in the most recent versions (currently that is 1.10.2, or 16w42a) of Minecraft? If so, please update the affected versions and help us keeping this ticket updated from time to time. If you are the owner/reporter of this ticket, you can modify the affected version(s) yourself.
You mean: "Solid blocks render differently in inventory than in-game with transparent pixels"
