UNASKED-FOR autoupgrade from 14w11b to 1.7.9 emptied inventory

Given my OS version this may not be a common issue, but running 1.7.9 for the first time I found my entire inventory emptied completely. Could be a big annoyance if you had any valuable stuff...

Bug title updated. Please reopen.

The issue is NOT that 14w11b->1.7.9 loses your stuff; that's known and documented. The issue is that you get an automatic 'upgrade' from 14w11b->1.7.9 WITHOUT BEING ASKED, and if you don't spot it, you'll get an unanticipated data loss. This could affect anyone whose launcher profile is set to 'Use latest version', if they don't realise what the consequences of the changeover will be BEFORE they start playing - so it's very easy to get caught out.

Downgrading is not supported.

This bug caused an automatic "update" to 1.7.9 on my snapshot-enabled profile. Because this downgrade happened automatically (without setting changes), I didn't notice it until I loaded the world. I did not (repeat, did NOT) adjust my profile, my profile settings, or anything else that could have caused this.

It's rather annoying, and by annoying, I mean agonizingly infuriating. See the list below for an idea of how my Survival mode game has been boned:

This happened to me, and I lost:
33+ double-chests full of stone (about 114,000 stone, all smelted with coal)
15+ double-chests full of cobblestone (not yet smelted)
1 double chest full... of coal BLOCKS
15+double-chests full of dirt (over 50,000 dirt blocks, mostly harvested by shovel while mining)
3 double chests full (100%) of Enchanted books and gear, all enchanted at level 30 (months of accumulated magic placed on strictly diamond gear, including all of the best enchantments on several full sets of gear, armor, picks, swords, etc)
A large floor-to-ceiling wall map (all maps deleted, item frames dropped as items and remained)
About a chest full of filled in maps
64+ Diamond blocks
5+ Iron block stacks
2+ Gold block stacks
More than 7 double-chests of oak Wood blocks
Every single rare find discovered while gathering this wealth (chests full of saddles, slimeballs, enderpearls, etc)

Oh, and 12+ stacks of lapiz lazuli blocks

About 6 months of mining and gathering work, lost. Chests full of lava buckets, wheat, leather, even two double-chests full of bookshelves (which amounts to 6 double-chests of leather, 3 double-chests of wood blocks, and 18 double-chests of sugar cane to craft. Plus lots of clicking)

Since this update was automatic, I think it should be supported.

Yes, I didn't intentionally change version either. I allowed Minecraft to auto-select. But 1.7.9 was what was offered to me as the 'latest version', so I accepted it, trusting the game not to lose anything. If it was going to cause data loss, the version change should not have been permitted.

Shall I ask for this to be reopened with a new bug title, e.g.:

'Launcher applied /unasked-for/ version change (11b to 1.7.9), causing data loss'?

Please note the key word in my original bug report - '/Autoupgrade/'. I had no expectation there was going to be any problem.

Yes, I would appreciate it if this bug were reopened with a new title relating to the auto-upgrade.

I've decided to try to manually restock my chests via creative mode, btw, but I don't want this to accidentally happen again, so...

Same thing happened to me. Every single one of my chests at my home base is empty, and all paintings/item frames attached to them have popped off and were found floating on the nearest block. I've played for close to a year on this world. Not happy that all that work seems to be for naught.

The Launcher does what's being commanded to him:

-"Use latest Version" without "Enable expiermental versions" being checked --> 1.7.9-
-"Use latest Version" with "Enable expiermental versions" being checked --> 14w11b-

I'll repeat it, since I'm not sure you heard. This occured WITHOUT any setting changes (such as un-checking the "Enable experimental versions" box)

Last night I was playing 14w11b, which I had been running, automatically for days now (since my profile settings are set to "Use latest Version" WITH "Enable experimental versions" being checked). I had lots of stuff, much of it gathered across many earlier versions.
I closed the game and went to bed.
This morning, I launched the game, hit "play" immediately, and then loaded up my world. My stuff was gone. Everything. All of it.

Then I noticed the version (1.7.9) and quit to figure out what was going on. My settings were untouched (still set to "Use latest Version" WITH "Enable experimental versions" being checked.) Yet the bottom-right-hand corner read "Ready to play minecraft 1.7.9.

I manually set the version to 14w11b and tried to load my world again.Stuff was still gone.

Then I reset the settings to "Use latest Version" WITH "Enable experimental versions" being checked. This time, the launcher read "Ready to play minecraft 14w11b.

In case it matters, I tested this in a new world, and switching between those versions consistently deletes everything in all inventories that load in 1.7.9 which were previously loaded in 14w11b.

I'll say it all again, shorter this time:
Didn't touch settings
Version downgraded automatically
Lots of Stuff deleted

If that's not a bug, then I'm a creeper.

That was in fact a bug, 1.7.9 was accidently marked "newer" than 14w11b earlier today, but that got fixed.

migrated

Ah... I appreciate that it's fixed. I'll have to be more careful to watch for updates every time I play, and back up my world if the version tries to change.

I supposed nothing is being done for those who may have lost years of work because of this bug?

Ah well, creative mode at least earned me back my bulk resources (like those 117,000 stone) pretty fast. I just wish I could remember exactly what miscellaneous items I had in various places. For example, I cannot remember what types of enchanted books I had stored, so I'm shorting myself by more than half a chest worth of level 30 enchantment books.

No more stumbling upon long forgotten caches of resource near this area either, I suppose. Just a few empty chests.

If you already loaded up your world, saw the loss, then exited, the data is gone/overwritten.
