I logged on today and found that it says Merry Xmas as the splash. So I started my single player world and found that all my chests say "missingte".
Will post screenshots soon. I tried force updating and it did not work.

I don't think so.
I tried deleting the entire Minecraft folder and force updating.
The strange part is that the new textures ARE there, but they aren't used.
The textures are tried to use, but not found and therefore replaced with "MissingTexture".
Again the question: Might there be some (hidden) caching mechanism of the operating system for Java related stuff ? So that the classes are loaded from the .jar files but additional files not ?!?
Can you start minecraft by
java -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -cp minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame
(or whatever suits for OSX)and see if there are any messages in the console !?
EDIT: Deleted the Xmas textures from minecraft.jar, there are no messages in the console.
It seems as if the actual app is started that way.
I run a server on another Mac and the minecraft.net site said that you need to use the above line to run it properly. Yet when I double-clicked the server.jar, it worked fine.
Screenshots posted.
Last picture is my item folder in minecraft.jar. Not modded in any way, changed char.png to my skin so that it shows offline.
