Tamed cats act as ocelots

If you do not tell cats to sit down, they will simply start to run away from you like ocelots.
The only way to have the tamed cats follow you is by crouching while holding a fish in your hands, which is supposed to attract ocelots only.

This bug suggests that ocelots are interfering with cats and therefor are hard to handle as pets in-game.
