Some sounds play at a very soft volume whereas others play at a normal volume. Examples are, stone and pickup sounds are very, very soft, however, grass and leaf sounds seem fine. Reference here: --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ohd2jHdqWuY
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use the OpenAL.dylib file in LWJGL: v2.8.2
2. Place down several different blocks
3. Break them
4. Listen closely for the sounds at a low volume.
Since DB asked in IRC, my 'sound' volume is at 80%, it's not an issue there. 😃

Are you using OS X?

@Taylor Blau:
Environment: Mac OS X v10.8.2
happens to me too.
I have the same issue. I primarily miss the plop sounds when picking up items. There might be more sounds "missing".
I did a complete clean install for 1.5 and the issue persisted.
Mac OS X 10.8.2

Is this still a concern in the latest Minecraft version 14w08a? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

I believe this was fixed. Especially with the addition of the sliders and Searge fixing some of the sounds that were ignoring the sliders. https://twitter.com/SeargeDP/status/481197694955028481
