Placing a block where you stand

When you place a block while standing in that place, it gets consumed. If you try to place the same block where it vanished, it gets back into your inventory and the other stays on the ground. Tested for survival mode only.

What I expected to happen was...:
When placing a block, the block appears where it was placed.

What actually happened was...:
When placing a block, the block flashes in place and does not get placed. The block gets removed from inventory and some "fiddling" with inventory (place another block, place a torch, etc) sometimes makes the missing block reappear in inventory.

Steps to Reproduce:
Place a block at your feet
Stand as close to that block as possible
Attempt to place a block on top of this block, at your head level, and it will disappear.

Additional Information:
The same effect is observed when placing a block at foot level, it is just easier to reproduce when there is a block at foot level to ensure the player is not occupying the space where the block will go.

In 14w32b this happens when facing North, East and West, but I was not able to reproduce it facing South.
In 14w31a this happens when facing North or South, but I was not able to reproduce it facing East or West.

I could not reproduce for a screenshot, but it has happened to me before. It seems to happen when the place you are trying to put the block is illegal, such as trying to place a block in the space that an entity runs into at the last second.

I'm not sure it's possible to place a block where you stand in Survival. Tested with setblock and cannot reproduce.

I opened a bug which may be a duplicate of/relative to this one, I can't really tell.

This is the bug at full play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKVL1R5C-Nw

Confirmed still in 14w31a.
I was able to reproduce this when facing North or South, but not East or West by getting as close as possible and then attempting to place the block. See the first part of http://youtu.be/EsHf9usSs2Y
Notice the player is not standing in the same space that you want the block to be, just close to it.

@Arjan and @Darin, those videos don't seem to match the description of this bug. I think MC-60446 is a better report for your videos. This bug is either not existent or needs a better description by the OP. Based on this report, block is being consumed while you stand in place - to me that means it removes from you.

If you read more than the title MC-2208 is pretty much the opposite of this issue.

Edit: for clarity, MC-2208 is about being able to place transparent blocks where you shouldn't be able to. Where this issue is about any and all blocks disappearing after being placed near, but not actually in, a place you shouldn't be able to place a block.

Tinkered with this a little in release version 1.8.2. It can be recreated fairly easily. When placing a block at foot level in front of you while crouched it occurs at exactly 7/10ths of the block your in(in the direction your facing). Although does require some movement. Facing east standing on 0.7 64 0.5 hold shift and tap forward and back keeping near X 0.7 while trying to place block at 1 65 0. Of coarse its easier in creative where can instantly destroy the block when it does get placed. These steps work anywhere, I just felt east in a positive chunk was easier to explain. East in a negative chunk would be at -0.3 instead, etc

If this issue is a duplicate of anything it would be MC-8471

This bug is NOT fixed as of version 1.8.8

Reproduced it quickly (thx to Someone 3x7 for that nice guide): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQYbVJn3byc
the upload is in 360p, youtube is just being slower than me right now.
In case youtube decides to be mean, I will keep the VoD on my twitch channel http://twitch.tv/foxcatumbreon
this is NOT a duplicate of 2208, i repeat NOT a duplicate, so please remove that connection.
I also included a different version of this bug with fences in the VoD.

I hope this gets fixed quickly because it's easy to pay double for single blocks/fences in survival (which I also showed in the VoD). You need to trigger this bug two times in a row with the exact same block type to not lose any blocks (I lose the wood block while showing that off in the VoD).

To Michelle Foxcat: while this ticket is still incorrectly linked, MC-8471 is a better place to post concerning it.
