Cannot reproduce with 1.4.3 pre

Cannot reproduce in 1.4.2 either. Are you able to reliably reproduce this Paul?

I'll try to upload a screenshot. I was able to do it several times. You have to click off to the side in order to get it to place. Looking directly down does not work, it needs to be on the corner.

Could you attach those images to the issue so people don't have to search through comments to find them? There's an "Attach Files" button at the top of the screen.
You can embed images as well, though it isn't necessary.

Since my report MC-667 was closed as a duplicate of this, I am repeating it here since it is not about blocks placed on blocks, and so might not be actually the same bug:
Stand in one-block-high water, look down, and right-click with a lily pad. The lily pad will be placed intersecting the player.

You don't actually need to be standing on any stairs. Stand on the corner of four blocks with a few stairs to look at, and try placing one on each of the four blocks you are standing on, looking back at the stairs between attempts.

Confirmed for 1.4.6

Also bugs with snow blocks (MC-14925)

This may be related to the bug that allows clicking through corner stairs.

Can someone reopen MC-20278. The problem is that the code doesn't prevent the sending of the singal to place null blocks. Its also due to different code being used to send the actual message to place the block in the world. The solution I found was to move some code to a place just before the message is sent so that these messages to place null blocks aren't even produced in the first place.

Can reproduce with fences in 1.6.1, by standing on a fence and placing a block above it, in the same block as the player.

Still in 1.7.2.

Is this still a concern in the latest Minecraft version 14w04b? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Stairs placeable intersecting the player confirmed for 14w04b. Note that you must be standing on the lower half of a stair block for this to happen as originally described.
Lily pads placeable intersecting the player confirmed for 14w04b, no special conditions. I stand by my previous claim that MC-667 should be considered a different bug than this, as lily pad placement is unlike regular block placement and the code causing the bug is most likely different.

Reopened MC-667

Aye, present in 1.8.1-pre3

Reopened, Thanks.

In 1.8.1-pre4

Affects 1.8.2-pre7.

Confirmed for
1.8.6 It doesn't matter what causes you to be a half block higher than the normal block height. It happens also when you stand on slabs or fences for example and right click the wall in front you with stairs. I can only confirm this for stairs. May be caused by some strainge mechanics as for example placing a stair and while standing next to it looking nearly straight down but still pointing at the edge of the stair places the block above the stair instead of next to it.
Note: For slabs it seems also different in a way that it won't even place them if the position is valid. For example an upside down slab above your head while standing on a slab. (Which means that between the two slabs would still be 2 blocks space)

@@unknown: I think being unable to place top slabs above your head when standing on a 0.5 high block is a different bug, please create a separate ticket for that.

1.8.7

Confirmed for pre-1.8.8

Confirmed for 1.10.2. To reproduce: Jump and place a fence under you. When you fall back down, you'll be inside the fence.

Can anyone confirm for anything except fences? Else I would change the title and description.

Beds still reproducible (look at your feet, place bed), glass panes not anymore. Reopened and updated MC-64919, updating description here now.
edit: Tried with stairs, can't reproduce. Further testing required.

MC-64919 initially included placing the glass pane you ended up inside inside yourself.

Removed the gamemode because it affects creative and very likely adventure mode as well

I can reproduce this in 16w50a
