When I place a Redstone Torch on (the side of) a block with powered Redstone dust (or the torch is on the block and powered Redstone appears on it) the torch breaks and drops an item. This does not happen with unpowered Redstone.

Happens to me too. The torch is supposed to invert the signal from a pressure plate, but when I step on the plate, the torch disappears instead of just turning off.
The bug only happens when the torch gets powered (by any sort of redstone input) and has no solid block directly underneath it. If you place a torch on the side of a powered block, it will disappear as well, and placing several torches quickly at the same spot will result in the sound of a torch burning out. Block updates won’t destroy an unpowered torch.
The torch is supposed to turn off when the pressure plate is stepped on, in order to open a piston door. Instead, it gets destroyed. The door opens fine but won’t close until I place the torch back.
This bug doesn't seem to always happen on all the side of a block, but just on what seems to be a (or a few) random side(s). That's what it felt like in my two worlds I tested it on at least.
I think you posted this while I was writing another report of this. Oops. it seems to only happen when the block below the torch is transparent, like redstone dust or a slab.
