While playing fullscreen multiplayer, I decided to temporarily leave Minecraft using the Start key to check some online references. I pressed the Start key and entered the start screen and then entered my main brower on the desktop. I then closed it and tried to return to minecraft.
Expected Outcome
I would have clicked on the Minecraft icon on the bottom taskbar to return to the full-screen game, or at least return to a windowed game.
Actual Outcome
The game screen was windowed and frozen on a mostly white screen (picture below).
Notes
The problem also occurs if the game is exited via the "application switcher" key which is used to quickly transition between apps.
Steps to Reproduce
1. Start the minecraft launcher on a Windows 8 computer.
2. Launch Minecraft version 1.7.10.
3. At any time, either press the start button or press the application switcher key to leave Minecraft.

Check if you have a 32bit Java installed on a 64 bit windows. With a 64 bit Java you have more memory:
When using a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit operating system the automatic version detection will only show the 32-bit version of Java, the 64-bit version needs to be downloaded manually: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.

All right, if sun.arch.data.model means the bit version, I have 32-bit java. I'll change to 64-bit and attempt it again and see.
