[MC-63838] Testfor with entities not working

(Used command block)
Exact command:

execute @p ~ ~ ~ testfor @e[type=Item,r=2]

and even

execute @p ~ ~ ~ testfor @e

is not working

It worked at 14w26c

"Failed to execute [command] to [player]"

Please clarify what 'not working' means. Does the command fail? Are you getting unexpected output?
