What I expected to happen was
When I went into the dark, blocks would appear black or very dark.
What actually happened was
The blocks were completely transparent.
Steps to reproduce
1: Go into the dark
2: Observe how you can see through blocks
This bug has existed since 1.0, and perhaps before
It affects all dimensions and renders entities invisible as well.

Your java installation is fairly old and could use an update. Do you have the proper (and most up to date) graphics drivers installed?
Minecraft renders the rest of the blocks in the game. I think that rendering ones in the dark shouldn't require anything that isn't required to render the ones not in complete darkness. I'd say, no matter how old my graphics driver/java is, this is still a bug. It should be fixed.
It's not a matter of minecraft, on my PC are no see-through-holes.
Intel graphics drivers (and of course the hardware) are known as very error prone - Get a new driver
Right, sure...
Sorry if I sound stupid but how do you do that? I really don't know much about computers. I am not even sure if this is something I have to download, plug into my PC, open it up and insert it into it, or if I just have to buy a new PC.
Goto http://www.ubuntu.com/ and download a new linux distro.
You can even boot it as live system off a DVD without changing your yet installed system.
