I intended for the beacon to work
The beacon did not light up even though it had 9 iron blocks around it

Intended. As stated by Searge on MC-63446 "other block entities than command blocks will not work outside of the world border for performance reasons."
You can take screenshots by pressing F2 in minecraft instead of taking a photo of the screen. (I'll test it as soon as I have time.)
