textures_X.png in .minecraft directory

There are 5 different files in the '.minecraft' directory called:
textures_0.png
textures_1.png
textures_2.png
textures_3.png
textures_4.png

They can be deleted while the game is running but will return back after deletion.
They are images of various items and blocks, they all have different dimensions/details.

I think it's just what you say, a sort of cache to let the game run faster.

Most likely, working as intended.

The images are also scaled in different dimensions (8x8, 4x4), I'm pretty sure it's a bug or something.

Aside from the fact that they persist after the game is closed, not a bug. It allows resource pack creators to see the game's texture atlas(es), which allows them to see how the textures have been stitched. It also gives a good overview of all the block/item textures exist, allowing you to see a large amount in one place.

I believe more atlas files are generated if too much of the 1st one is used (in the case of more textures, or HD textures), and "different dimension" scaled images is likely a result of MIP mapping, so again, NOT a bug.

I have this EXACT problem. i have a windows 8.1 computer with the java update you have and for some reason minecraft won't download its directory properly. I have the textures_1-5.png like you have only i'm missing half the other packages. I can't download resource packs no matter how many times I try to re-install the .minecraft file and most of the textures and sounds in-game are completely scrambled. I hope you find a solution for your problem, and I hope i can find one for mine lol.

@@unknown: That's another problem. Please create a new ticket and attach there the complete output of the "Launcher Log" which can be found on the second tab of the launcher.

If the launcher closes after game start, please edit your profile and select "Launcher visibility" then, "Keep the launcher open".

I think this is intended, as MC-6771 has been fixed, so Mojang has definitely already seen this. And yes, I know that bug is not talking about these exact files, but things often get renamed in code. This is useful if you quickly want a complete overview of Minecraft's blocks.

No longer an issue in current versions.

Can confirm 1.8.1-pre1 as an exact fix version, assuming assigning an actual resolution version to this ticket is acceptable.
