game locked up, used force quit, now crashes every login

Initially logged in to single player today on 1.8, then game froze. I used force quit to close it out. Since then I cannot login at all, get crash report every time I try to login. I have deleted game and redownloaded, to no avail.
Steps to Reproduce:

Dupe of MC-38527

The render distance has been set to an invalid value that isn't supported in 1.7.10. There are instructions in that post to resolve this.
