When I was playing on a vanilla minecraft server, i needed to make a farm. I placed seeds next to each other and they both broke into dropped seeds. I think it does that on block updates because if you plant it and wait a little, they break too.

That should never happen, unless the farmland is turning into dirt because it is improperly watered.
