I used paper to change the scale of a map. It worked fine for the first time but the second time the map was just a blank canvas and only a few blue pixels of water could be seen in a corner. I used a itemframe to display this broken map and it just showed a green arrow on a blank canvas (with the few blue pixels). Then I logged out and reloaded the game and the map had the previous scale level and was viewable again but it had a permanent green marker when I was holding it in my hands - and the paper to change the scale earlier was lost.

I've seen map scaling behave very oddly, though i think it was a few snapshot prior to 1.4.2. I can't/couldn't reproduce.
I had this same problem on SMP. A different map of mine also downgraded from a level 2 map to a level 1. (Possibly when holding it and re-logging.)
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
No answer on querry, assuming fixed.
I can't seem to zoom out on maps anymore. Am I doing this wrong? Does the same thing in survival and creative. See the pictures I just added.
That's another bug, see MC-87.
