When I opened the world I have been working on for the past month, the world first opened up to black. Usually it loads after a while, but this time it didn't load at all. Since had cheats on anyway, I tried teleporting, then going high to kill myself, and eventually I just used the "/kill" command to sepuku my character. When I respawned, the world was back except for a giant hole where I had just been. The hole goes all the way up and down, and it won't let me enter that area. I also tried accessing the area through the top and it won't let me.

Just forgot to add, I really have no idea how this happened. It was there one minute. I exited out to do something, came back, and it had fragged the entire area.

If it won't let you in from the top, that means the blocks are actually still there. No data has been lost, just a little bit corrupted. Keep the world. If 1.8.1 fixes this, there's a 99% chance that it will just reappear like nothing happened, however a chest or something may have disappeared, as corrupted tile entities (blocks able to store items, etc) are often the cause of things like this.
