There is a section of terrain that is not visible but seems to exist
since if I try to move into the hole i will "bounce" back and sometimes
take damage like I am suffocating.
It is a 16 by 16 perfect square and extends (from what I can see) all the
way down to bedrock. Looks like water from my viewpoint.
In the picture you can see torches about halfway down; I'm pretty sure that
is a shaft that I found and the torches were placed by me;
but have not been down there since noticing the empty space.
I can't be positive but I'm pretty sure the hole was not there
at world creation. Especially if those torches were placed by me. I think i would have noticed the hole. 🙂

Fixed for 1.8.1. See MC-2545

Sorry about the duplicate; I did a search but didn't find those. I wasn't using the right
terminology. I'm new to Minecraft (I literally just got it this Nov 3.)
so please forgive me for not knowing things.
From what I read on MC-2545 1.8.1 is not released yet? If not; any ETA on it?
MC-2545 also said there was a possible way to fix it? Does this fix require anything that will negatively my world. (I.E. having to use "cheat mode" to fix the chunk; which might disable features; I.E. the achievement system.
If not, can you give me a link / run-through of how to fix it please? (Let me know if you need any further information) I'm assuming the chunk / coordinates from the debug screen would be needed to localize the area.
It is stated that it is fixed in 1.8.1; does that mean that upgrading to 1.8.1 when it is released will fix the issue?
Sorry about all these questions; I'm just trying to figure out how I am going to deal with this situation.
For example, if 1.8.1 is coming out soon and upgrading won't resolve the current issue; I may just wait until the update and start a new world over.
I learn quickly and am very computer savvy (just a noob to minecraft itself) so please be as
verbose / tech savvy when answering.
Thank you all for your time and quick responses!

1.8.1 still has no set release date yet, but Mojang is going to start thinking of a release date when -pre4 is released today.

Sadly, yes. You can use MCEdit to fix the chunk error per this comment, but the only stuff you'll lose is whatever you had in the chunk when the error first occured.

You can either use the link above or can find some videos on YouTube. Just search for "MCEdit chunk error".

If you're running a world before 1.8.1, then sadly, the world is corrupted and will have to make a new one.

Thank you Sonic for all the answers! I'll check out that MCEdit thing later, luckily nothing that I had built was in the affected area; however it is within a chunk or two of my first home, so its annoying being there. I probably will try to fix it sometime soon.
Need some clarification to your last answer; do you mean that if something is corrupted before 1.8.1 it will still be corrupted unless I fix it; or are you saying that 1.8.1 will NOT be compatible with older versions. Meaning I will have to use profiles to set the version so I can still play my 1.8 map.
One last indulgence if you don't mind. Today I encountered a visual only bug, where light was not spreading correctly / being updated when blocks were mined. I would mine a area that had torches all around and the newly mined blocks would look like they had a light level of 1 where any nearby blocks (air) around had the proper lighting based on the torch nearby. Sometime it would fix itself within like 5 - 30 secs, sometimes it never updated. (I walked away, never checked back)
I have no idea what terminology to use so I figured I would just check with you than make another duplicate report.
If this is a known issue can you link the report for me?
Thanks again for all your time.

What I'm saying is that something that is corrupted before 1.8.1 will remain corrupted unless fixed. Regarding the compatibility, 1.8.1 is compatible with 1.8, so you'll be able to connect to a 1.8 server from a 1.8.1 client.

That would be MC-64652, which is still unresolved as of today.
Oh, and no problem! 😉

Thank you so much, I'll go upvote MC-64652 then.

Sigh I'm so sorry to keep bothering you, but when I go into MCEdit, the terrain looks normal. there is no hole, the best match youtube video I found showed the chunk not there in both of them. since its an undeveloped area its next to impossible to figure out where it is in MCEdit. Should i go into Minecraft; make some kind of wall / way to tell where it is and just delete then? I didnt see an option to specify coordinate / chunk in MCEdit by number (which could be gotten by F3.)

Basically, yes. I'm not sure if you watched this video, but it should help you solve the problem.

Update:
Ok, I did exactly what I thought I should do and fenced the area so I could find it. Went into MCEdit, deleted chunk. Reloaded world; everything is hunky dory, terrain is back; even the torch lighting issue was gone. I was like Woot!
So I go about my business, then I decide to go back into the massive underground cave and when I get to the main "room" I notice a very bright spot off in the distance at the other side of it. I"m thinking to myself, I can't have placed that many torches. So I head that way... you guessed it; another chunk gone. This one about ~5 chunks away, maybe more, hard to tell. I get to it, and I notice that the torch lighting issue is back. I don't know how, but it seems to me that if a previously placed torch is lighting into a missing chunk, the chunk the torch is in will have the lighting issue. Twice now it has done exactly that. The first time was just around the corner from the missing chunk. So I go topside to once again try to find the area and fence it so I can delete it in MCEdit and while I am placing my fence a skeleton wanders near me. I go to attack him, and nothing happens, I notice he is now frozen. I cease being able to break leaves, I can still place my fences, but cannot destroy anything in the area. I finish my fence, and start walking back home to save and quit and find several more mobs all "frozen". I get back to my house and just beyond it is sky and nothingness. Obviously the game engine crashed, but still allowed me to move around.
So I exited, deleted the offending chunk in MCEdit, and now everything seems to be in order again. However, I suspect that there is another chunk nearby that has been corrupted, that I will find eventually.
So to reiterate; from what has happened twice to me, I suspect the torch lighting issue is connected to the missing chunks. Since the missing chunks have been fixed in 1.8.1, I don't think any action needs to be taken on the torch lighting issue. Just my two cents. I'll update further once I find the next missing chunk (if it exists) and will confirm if the torch lighting issue once again exists.

Final Update:
After doing much exploring in my little world I decide to once again delve into my massive cave I first found and which in I have discovered both my missing chunks. I'm doing some 'branching' for diamonds when all of a sudden I realize the torch lighting issue has happened... again.
So I take note of the coordinates from F3 and head topside.
Sure enough there is a chunk missing within one chunk distance of where I noted the torch lighting issue.
All 3 times; the chunk disappeared while I was underground.
All 3 times; the torch lighting issue was within 1 chunk distance (neighboring) of the missing chunk and it only appeared when there was a chunk missing.
So anyway; I'm now scared for my pretty decent home I have now, if this chunk thing continues who's to say it won't hit my home. 😞 I think I'm going to stop going into that cave until 1.8.1 comes out.
It was stated that its been fixed in 1.8.1, but do they know what is causing it? Is there something I can do to stop it from happening? Or do I have to make sure I only go underground in areas where I don't care if a chunk disappears topside?
Last question: The issue says it is resolved and that the reporter (me) has to verify it? To close it / whatnot. How do I do that?
