I wanted to see the bottom of the min craft snow_layer so i tried to place it on a barrier. It didn't get placed so i thought it was strange. I tried placing it on another block but that worked fine.

I don't think it's intended, because you can place levers/redstone/comparators/repeaters/buttons/etc. on barriers, but you can't on transparent blocks. (Yeah I do know you can place redstone wire on glowstone)
Confirmed for 1.8.1. This also occurs with hoppers and slabs. Interestingly, it doesn't happen with glowstone.
Relates to MC-2813.
This report should probably be consolidated into MC-2813, as they are essentially the same bug, just with different blocks.
Might be intended, since you can't place snow on transparent blocks (glass, ice etc.)
