Mobs do not appear, Game glitches badly after rendering 8+ chunks

Player model disappears in inventory screen and when in F5 mode except for the main arm. Aggressive mobs (except witches) are invisible except for their weapons and shadows. Setting the render distance past 7 affects the landscape and morphs moving mobs like squids into giant, scary looking scary things.
