My friend has minecraft installed on her home PC (OS windows 7 ultimate), and her laptop (os Wondows XP SP3). When 1.4.7 was released she noticed that some of her tamed cats and dogs would not respond to being told to follow. We did some testing, and it turns out that the animals that she tamed on her PC would not respond while told to follow on her laptop and vice versa.
We just did some more testing, and found out that the laptop plays off line (no ethernet cable connected) (she has it at work for the slow days when they are updating the servers (she works as an IT)) and the cat/dog tamed off lone only respond while playing off line, and same for the online ones (ethernet cable connected)
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install minecraft on both an XP SP3 machine, and windows ultimate 7.
2. Create a save game on both versions (using the same minecraft account).
3. tame a cat and dog in each game, save and exit.
4. put the files on a pen drive, and switch them between the computers.
5. Load each game on their respective opposite machines and test both the cat and dog.
6. Repeat until satisfied

there is only a single .dat file in the folder, but i updated the description with some new information we found.

That's to be expected.
When you play online, you're playing with your mojang account name - but when you play offline, then you're playing as "Player".

How many <playername>.dat files do you have in the folder <worldname>/players/ ?
