[MC-78458] I can't log onto a server that is lower than 1.8

1. launched minecraft in 1.7.9
2. went to multiplayer
3. clicked on the desired server
4. joined the server
5. minecraft crashed

Environment

OS: Mac OS X (ver 10.10.1, arch x86_64)
Java: 1.6.0_65 (by Apple Inc.)
Launcher: Minecraft Launcher 1.6.11 (bootstrap 5)
Minecraft: 1.7.9 (updated Mon Apr 14 07:29:23 MDT 2014)

Duplicate of MC-38527. Your render distance is set too high for older versions of the game.
