If the player or any entity goes to or above Y=256 their entity model suddenly becomes darker. The player's vision also darkens. I figured this out by making an ice farm at the building limit when I realized my player model became dark. This happens in any world or biome.
What I expected to happen:
Well, not to do that, I guess.
What really happened:
The player entity model darkened.

This has been in the game for a long time and is probably a duplicate of some other issue.
And also, why would you even want to have an entity up so high?

@Samuel - That doesn't mean it's working as intended. I would think this is a bug.

You cannot place a block above 256, so why should the player/entity be there? The game has an upper limit for a reason, the fact that it has one is more than enough to justify that is working as intended.

yes, but entitys can walk, and also jump there
can confirm this

And if you have flight you can fly up over 2,000,000,000,000 If you had the time but nothing works that high really.

Confirmed.

The entities are not black but very dark, see contrast enhanced screenshot.
Additionally in the debug info the biome, light levels (and local difficulty) is missing as of 15w31*
Confirmed for 15w42a
Confirmed for 15w43a

Should be reopened. Particles are still dark in 15w44b.
Confirmed for 15w44b

@unknown, @unknown: Please create a new ticket for the particles issue (with a reference to this ticket), this is apparently a differnt thing.
