[MC-85578] chopping wood doesn't work

chopping wood for ages with no drops right at start of a new survival game

What i expected:
expected to hit tree a few times and get wood blocks

what happened?
spent whole day period hitting said tree with hand and got no wood

repeat for bug:
1)hit tree loads
2)get nothing

Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while in-game and attach the crash report ([minecraft|http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder]/crash-reports/crash-<DATE>-client.txt) here.

The wood is there, some 20 blocks beside and below you:
