Re-spawning at the home bed in has stopped functioning if I travel with a bed. I used to travel with a bed in the inventory and use it at a number of places I've set up as waypoints then I destroy it (and pick it back up into inventory). Before this, if I died while carrying it, I would still respawn at my "home" location where I have a permanent bed. Now, the last two times I've died (due to boat-related bugs), I get the "your home bed was missing or obstructed" and respawn at the central spawn point. Fortunately that's only a few minutes away from my existing home bed but it was nice to be able to use beds that way. Having a bed at each waypoint would leave me at my last-slept-at remote location with no available inventory if I die and would be too-much like starting over completely before working my way back to my "home."

Beds don't have a spawnpoint memory. The last place you put sleep in a bed becomes your spawnpoint. If there is no bed at that location when you re-spawn, you are spawned at the world spawn instead.
That is simply not true. The game used to respawn at the last EXISTING BED location I had slept in. I developed a strategy of carrying and sleeping in a bed then destroying it and moving on based on the previous game behavior and it no longer works that way. I could rely on being respawned at my home location.
You should have let the player community know this was changed. I lost hours and hours of playing time because of this change that I used to get around the buggy boat issues.
I can assure you, there has not been a change. The behaviour you describe is not only as I described in the game, but is equally indicated on the minecraft wiki. Feel free to review the revision history on it, and try older versions of the game. Vanilla minecraft has always had the same bed behaviour.
Please attach a picture of your bed location.
