Squids randomly fly out of water

Occasionally, squids will start floating above water, even though they should remain inside of it. While flying squid are a real thing, this does not seem to be intended behavior within Minecraft (given that it is highly inconsistent).

What I expected to happen was...

Squids are swimming happily in the sea

What actually happened was...

Some squids are flying, out of the ocean, up into the air.

Steps to Reproduce

This issue cannot be consistently reproduced, and seems to be highly lag-dependent. The attached setup can sometimes generate squids with this behavior, but it is rare.

Screenshots

Code analysis

Based on 1.11 decompiled using MCP 9.35 rc1

The problem is that the motion handling part of the code is only done server-side. This includes setting the horizontal motion (X and Z) to 0 and reducing the vertical motion (Y) when the squid is not in water.

If this was on a server, It was just server lag that caused this. I've seen this in all versions, and honestly its funny!

Could you post screenshots? Also, was this SMP or SSP? If it was SMP, then this is indeed a lag issue.

When i grow up i want to be a flying potato 😃...thats the squids thought

If squids can't fly, I can't. I love that squids can fly, they can reach new goals and get out of glitchy spawns! I support flying squids 100%!

Any good way to reproduce this? I tried the demo seed (as suggested in a duplicate), but there were no squids at the mentioned location. Is it just lag and luck?

null

Definitely caused by lag. But I can confirm for 1.10.2. Just build up what is depicted in the screenshot, spawn a squid in the flowing water, then, if the server lags, the squid might start flying (you might need to push it a little).

I think the bug here is that client-side prediction doesn't make the squid fall when outside water.

Relates to MC-89883 (but separate from it).

Considering confirmed in 1.11.2 due to squid drifting that was seen at the very end of Etho's LP episode 483, which happened without another entity pushing the squid.

That is probably MC-58294

Is this still an issue in the most recent versions (currently that is 1.12.2, or 18w03b) of Minecraft? If so, please update the affected versions and help us keeping this ticket updated from time to time. If you are the owner/reporter of this ticket, you can modify the affected version(s) yourself.

Mateus Pereira Milbradt

I didn`t tested in 1.12.2 or 18w03b, but I tested in 1.16.3 and it works, but they teleport back to the water. Also affects 1.16.4.

I think the case you're seeing is MC-89883 (based on them getting pushed), not them just drifting upwards. (Sorry for not responding the first time you posted; 1.16.3 or 1.16.4 as a newer version is fine, though they're already listed on MC-89883)

This should have never been a bug as squid can fly.

Squid can, in fact, fly.
