Birch saplings won't grow through birch leaves

I'm trying to get a birch farm started in my game but the leaves from the grown trees seem to be preventing the saplings from growing. I have 2 blocks of space between saplings and at least one block of empty space surrounding each one at ground level, but the saplings between trees won't grow unless I remove the leaf blocks above them.

I used to have a spruce farm in the same spot with the same layout and never had an issue; the problem seems to be exclusive to birch.

Works just fine for me, try bone meal.

Right, I suppose I should have mentioned that. I went into creative and spammed each sapling with bone meal for at least 15 seconds, to no effect. That's why I'm holding bone meal in the picture there. I'll give it another shot to be sure.

The snow might be a problem.

So this makes no sense. I double checked that bone meal didn't work on the saplings I'd planted, and it didn't, but when I planted some on open ground nearby to make sure the snow wasn't a problem (which it shouldn't be; the other trees in the screenshot I uploaded had grown up right next to snow without any issue), they all sprang right up after a couple shots of bone meal. I even planted a ring of them, growing all the outside ones first to ensure the only empty space above the middle one was where the trunk would grow, and it grew without issue as well. Then I replanted the original row and, again, a few shots of bone meal to each had 'em all sprouting up even if their neighbors' leaves overlapped their growth area.

I've absolutely no idea what happened, and I haven't played long enough in survival yet to know whether the trees will grow naturally without me spamming them with bone meal, but at the moment it seems as if everything is working properly again.I suppose I'll just have to hope it continues to do so.
