realm cannot render, causes crash

When attempting to enter a realm my character spawns in a world where nothing is rendered. It looks like my character is just floating in the sky with nothing around him. Then the game kicks me out. I tried turning down my rendering radius and did nothing, ive uninstalled and reinstalled and it did nothing, I switched to version 1.8.9 and everything worked fine (but I cannot play in a 1.9 realm while running 1.8.9 so it does me no good). this has been happening for the last week now.

What I expected to happen was...:
I would be in game and be able to join my friend's realm no problem.

What actually happened was...:
the world does not render and the game crashes for both single player and our multiplayer realm
