Random purple beacon beams everywhere

I started up a new survival world, where I saw tons and tons of purple beacon beams. I went to investigate with /gamemode 3, and I found that they went straight through the ground as if nothing was there. They stretch all the way down past bedrock, and disappear when I approach them.
