When I try to execute a playsound command, such as "/playsound entity.player.burp @a," the console returns, "An unknown error occurred while attempting to perform this command."

The syntax of the command is

/playsound <sound> <source> <player> [x] [y] [z] [volume] [pitch] [minimumVolume]

You forgot about the source
