The elytra does not work

When ever I try to glide off of the end warship thing where i found the elytra with the elytra equipped in my torso armor slot the elytra doesn't work right and i fall to my doom.

what i expect:
I fly away gracefully

what happens:
I fall and possibly die

Steps to reproduce:
Put elytra on back, jump from a high place
