other players spawn in the void out of bounds when joining a multiplayer world

whenever i host a game (on steam) and invite other players to join (windows store/xbox store, but still on pc). if everyone is in the same lobby on the main menu, and then we start the game, the other players will almost always spawn into the void. they can teleport out using X or just rejoin to fix the issue. this is a very repeatable issue
