The buried treasure mechanic

In one of the new updates, the buried treasure update was added. My issue started after I had found the chess and attained the valuables within. I opened another unrelated chess and discovered another map. This map led me to the same point as before. At first, I thought another chess was hidden away in the same area, so I pretty much erased the local landscape in my search. However there was no other chess, and every other map from then on has led me to the same point. 
I would appreciate any insight into this matter.
