When I run the Installer from my downloads screen, it installs, starts the Launcher, and I can run Minecraft. When I double click on the Launcher, nothing happens. Reinstalling every time is an OK work around, but seems kinda stupid. Am I trying to start it from the wrong place?
I'm assuming the Launcher is the most recent version given, but I can't find a version number on my properties menu.

You have to copy the downloaded file Minecraft.exe
to some place (e.g. Desktop). Start it from there.
1) Yes, this is the current version, I couldn't find the version number on the launcher, so I left the default.
2) Do you mean the file in my downloads folder? I assumed that was the installer.
Aha.
Sorry for not being more verbose.
There is no installer, because first time installing and starting the game is the same process:
That Minecraft.exe
what you download from https://minecraft.net/download is in fact the so called bootstrap loader.
That is what yo start everytime when you want to play.
The bootstrap loader checks if there is an update to the launcher, and possibly downloads a newer launcher version and starts it.
The launcher itself does the same with Minecraft (check, download and start).
The only part what cannot be updated automagically is the bootstrap loader, therefore you have to download it manually and replace the old version. That may happen every now and then but not every often (if ever again)
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft / Launcher version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
