an unexpected issues has occurred and the game has crashed

Click play, looking at task manager I see java starts and then crashes and I am returned to the launcher with the error "an unexpected issues has occurred and the game has crashed".  See the jpg attachment, when I launch the shortcut it uses nvidia gpu by default, if I manually select the intel built in gpu minecraft will actually launch, so this very much seems to be related to the nvidia card.  Although nothing had changed and it jsut stopped working 2 days ago.  I tried downloading drivers from nvidia directly and then reverted back to the latest lenovo drivers to no effect.  IT appears if I connect a display and laucnh it on the display  it will crash, but if I start it on the laptop and then connect the display it works.  Its a dell d3218HN
