Launcher hard crashes when using a custom Java installation with modded instances

Hello,

Over on the Fabric (Users of optifine and forge seem to experience the same issue as well) discord we have been getting a number of reports of the latest vanilla launcher crashing with fabric.

This seems to be the case on windows and mac when using a custom java version with modded instances such as fabric. As far as im aware no one has been able to reproduce this with vanilla.

In my testing I am able to stall the launcher on windows, and hard crash it on MacOS. In all cases there doesnt appear to be anything useful in the log files. (MacOS provided a thread dump) You can see the issue that was raised on our issue tracker here: https://github.com/FabricMC/fabric-loader/issues/399

I have attached logs from our users who are based on windows, and included a thread dump that MacOS provided.

Please let me know if you require anymore information, I will do my best to help resolve this issue.

Many Thanks

Although this does not hard crash, but launcher freezes in "Preparing..." stage when using Forge. MCL-17214

Yep seems we broke stuff with our latest build. We're looking into this. Thanks for reporting!

Mine just fully exits the launcher with no other signs of failure - Even when "keep launcher open" is enabled.

I was using JDK11 for a few minor performance improvements, but currently using the bundled runtime.

Can confirm, getting this exact issue:

The new launcher update bricked my fabric loader launcher settings. I run Minecraft fabric with Java 15 instead of the pre-installed Java 8 JVM. This was all working fine until my launcher was updated. Now the launcher will either work with Fabric running Java 8, or Vanilla running Java 15, but not both. Also seeing two slightly different behaviors depending on how the launcher is configured:

  • If I set "keep the launcher open while games are running" and "open output log": The game hangs on "preparing..." then hard crashes

  • If I do not have the above settings on, the launcher just hard crashes

Output logs do not state anything useful from what I've seen; they don't even update on the crash.

It works with the Minecraft inbuild Version Java 1.8.0_51

Well what ever this issue needs to be fixed by mohjang :3

But with all newer Versions farbic and Optifine got crashed (closees after some freeze time)

How to use default minecrafts java (1.8.0_51 32-bit)

Just move to your launcher - Klick Edit instead of Play and click on more options to see the java lines

take of the current selection so it does choose the "default directory" what will be the java

that mincraft downloads into the minecraftfolder when the launcher was started the fist time. (may this option was added for all kids that dont know how to download and install a java...  but finaly.. This version allowes optfine and also farbic to run..

Hey guys, sorry for the trouble with this. We have now rolled out a new version of the launcher and this should be fixed for beta users of Minecraft Launcher.

Enjoy your modded versions with custom JRE!

Thanks for the fix!

Is there a way we can force this update? I don't have any of this beta stuff and the MCL version I'm on is still 2,2.2161

This issue still occurs with me (specifically while trying to launch Optifine), however, the issue seems to be resolved if you manually create the installation instead of using the automatically generated one.
