Occasionally after playing Minecraft the launcher refuses to open. I found out that it is due to the "Minecraft launcher" process is not responding. it can be fixed with a restart or closing the process in activity monitor manually, but anyone without basic computer knowledge would be confused.
(I also play with optifine but it also happens with the vanilla game)
